Commencement and Degree Celebrations

George Mason Commencement and Degree Celebrations are coming soon. Spring Commencement will take place on Thursday, May 15, at 9:30 a.m. in EagleBank Arena. Degree Celebrations on May 14–17 will honor individual graduates as they cross the stage. �鶹�� 鶹�� is seeking faculty and staff volunteers to help with the events. Sign up today. Community College and High School Graduation Ceremonies at EagleBank Arena

Heavy traffic is expected on and around George Mason �鶹��’s Fairfax Campus for regional community college and high school graduation ceremonies at EagleBank Arena from May 12 through June 16.

Northern Virginia Community College's Commencement will take place at EagleBank Arena on Monday, May 12, at 11 a.m.

High school graduation ceremonies start at EagleBank Arena on Tuesday, May 27, and continue through Monday, June 16. EagleBank Arena will host up to three ceremonies each day, so traffic may be entering and exiting campus from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m. Please allow extra travel time on and around campus. George Mason faculty, staff, and students are advised to use the general permit area of the Rappahannock Parking Deck or the Field House parking lots to avoid delays. Shenandoah Parking Deck (levels 4 and 5) will be open for limited overflow student, employee, and event parking on weekdays when graduations occur.

Patriot Packout Happening through May 14

Patriot Packout is an opportunity to donate like-new and gently used items at the Fairfax Campus, Science and Technology Campus, and the Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation. During residential move-out, Patriot Packout diverts items from the waste stream and makes them available to those who can use them. Learn about accepted donation items, campus drop-off locations, and volunteer opportunities.

Students, faculty, staff, and community members are welcome to donate items. Donations are redistributed to George Mason Patriots, on-campus resources, and local community organizations, preventing useful items from ending up in the trash. Patriot Packout’s donations this spring will support the Patriot Pantry, Trans Clothing Closet, Art Supply Sharing Cabinet, First Gen+ Center, The MIX, Parking and Transportation's bike programs, and Food for Others, and more.

Open Enrollment Is Coming Soon: Drop-in Information Sessions

It’s almost time to make important choices about your benefits for the upcoming year. Open Enrollment starts Friday, May 16, and ends Friday, May 30, so be sure to mark your calendar. This is your annual opportunity to:

Review and update your health insurance
Add or remove dependents
Choose new benefits or make changes to existing ones
Take advantage of flexible spending accounts Health FSA and Dependent FSA

Drop-in information sessions will be hosted from May 19–30 across multiple campuses and virtually. The summer schedule for Mason Shuttles goes into effect on Monday, May 19. Check the schedule for specific routes. There will be no shuttle service on the following holidays:

Professional Clothing Closet: Donations Needed

The Professional Clothing Closet allows students in the College of Education and Human Development to rent clothes to wear to their internships or job interviews. The EDSE Council, a Special Education Program student organization, opened the closet due thanks to donations from the George Mason community. Read more about the program. Items are needed to help support the operations of the clothing closet. The following items are needed:

Clothes hangers
Shoe organizers
Clothing racks
Plastic storage bins for clothing
Full-length mirror

Donation items can be placed in the donation bin on the Fairfax Campus in the Finley Building outside Room 116B. If a donation is large, like a plastic bin, place it by the donation bin with a "donation" label on the item.

Reminders: Canvas Training and Blackboard Storage

Canvas Training
Starting in summer 2025, all courses will use Canvas as the university’s official learning management system (LMS). Instructors who have not yet participated in Canvas training, or have not begun this transition, should visit the "Are You Canvas Ready?" website for valuable information, resources, and checklists.

Blackboard Storage
Before July 15, users are strongly encouraged to download and save any materials from Blackboard that they may want or need to keep. Once Blackboard access ends, these materials will no longer be available. You will not have access to these courses in Canvas. If you have any questions or need assistance downloading your materials, visit lms.gmu.edu or contact the project team at lms@gmu.edu.

The �鶹�� Life Student Success Symposium is a chance to connect with colleagues, learn about innovative practices to support your work, and explore strategies to foster student engagement. The symposium will take place at the Fairfax Campus on Wednesday, June 4, with pre-conference sessions on Tuesday, June 3. Get the details and register.

1st Annual Counterterrorism Summit

The Terrorism, Transnational Crime and Corruption Center, the Schar School of Policy and Government, and Homeland Security Today will co-host the 1st Annual Counterterrorism Summit at Mason Square on Tuesday, June 3, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The summit will feature sessions discussing key terrorism challenges and the evolving tactics of terrorist organizations. Apply for the Faculty and Staff Book Scholarship

George Mason faculty and staff are eligible to apply for the $250 scholarship to cover books, software, and supplies for George Mason courses. Eligibility requirements include:

Enrolled in a George Mason degree or graduate certificate program
Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
At least one year of service at George Mason
“Successful,” “High-Performing,” or “Outstanding” rating in the most recent performance evaluation

Great 18th-Century British Baking Challenge

On your marks, get set, bake! �鶹�� Libraries is hosting a very old-fashioned baking challenge, and the recipes come from the Fairfax-Spencer Family Recipe Book held in George Mason’s Special Collections Research Center.

The event will happen on Wednesday, May 21, from 3–5 p.m. on the Fairfax Campus, Fenwick Library. Try your hand at one of the featured recipes, and bring the results to share—or simply come to taste-test and judge. Register to attend.

Resource Expo for Federal Employees and Contractors

Community members can discover job opportunities, resources, and career-themed workshops at the Next Steps: Resource Expo at Mason Square on Wednesday, May 28, from 12:30–5:30 p.m. More than 40 employers and service providers will be in attendance. Sessions will be available on transferable skills, using AI for a job search, activating your resilience for well-being, and more.

Math Enrichment Camps for Grades 6–9

Mason Math Odyssey is a camp for rising 6–9 graders who are curious about math and would like to learn about mathematics concepts typically not taught in K-12 curriculum. Campers will build mathematical maturity while honing problem solving, collaboration, and communication skills. Camps will be hosted from July 7–11 and July 21–25 on the Fairfax Campus. George Mason �鶹�� assistant vice president and director of athletics Marvin Lewis has announced the appointment of Ashton Henderson as its new senior deputy athletic director and chief operating officer. A highly respected national leader in college athletics and professional sports, Henderson brings nearly 15 years of experience spanning collegiate athletics and professional sports with stops at Florida State �鶹��, Clemson �鶹��, and the Detroit Pistons.

"Ashton Henderson is a dynamic and emerging leader in intercollegiate athletics," said Lewis. "He brings a unique blend of authenticity, strategic insight, and a deep commitment to the holistic development of student-athletes. His ability to foster collaboration across departments, cultivate meaningful relationships throughout the university, and lead in the ever-evolving NIL landscape will be an incredible asset to our program. We're proud to welcome Ashton and his wife, Chloe, to the George Mason family!"

As a senior member of the Athletics leadership team, Henderson will oversee the department's daily operations to ensure effective communication, collaboration, and consistent operational execution in support of more than 500 student-athletes, 100 full-time employees, and 200+ part-time staff members.

Henderson will champion new strategic initiatives to enhance the student-athlete experience, drive revenue, and galvanize the community. He will collaborate with campus and community partners to advance the athletics program and serve as the program administrator for men's basketball and other varsity athletics programs, including sport supervision responsibilities.

"I am fired up and incredibly honored to join the Mason Nation family," said Henderson. "This is a special institution rooted in excellence, and I am fully committed to serving our student-athletes, coaches, and community with energy, passion, and purpose. I look forward to building meaningful relationships and helping elevate the Patriots to even greater heights."

A former four-year letter winner in football at Michigan State �鶹�� (2006–09), Henderson most recently served as deputy athletic director for Championship Resources and Culture at Michigan State �鶹��. He provided executive leadership for nine areas: athletic training, Spartans Fuel (nutrition), athletic performance, student-athlete wellness, sports science and data analytics, EverGreen NIL education and strategy, Varsity S Club, student-athlete development, and diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging efforts. He also served as the sport administrator for women's basketball during the 2022-23

competition season. Under his leadership, the university's award-winning “EverGreen” NIL program was named the nation's Best Institutional Program at the 2023 NIL Summit.

“In my 40 years of collegiate coaching, I've never worked with anyone who cares more for the student-athlete than Ashton. He has a tremendous ability to build consensus and unity. He'll do amazing things at George Mason,” said Bob Braman, head coach of the Florida State men’s and women’s track and cross-country teams.

Henderson served as the first-ever director of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) for the Detroit Pistons, transforming the franchise's framework and earning national recognition as a Sports Inclusion Conference DEI Champion in 2021.

"Ashton Henderson has consistently demonstrated a work style that is both diligent and innovative, bringing fresh ideas and approaches to every project he tackles. His leadership is seen, felt, and heard even after he has left our organization--a strong leader with lasting impact,” said Nicolet Lewis, executive vice president and chief people officer of the Detroit Pistons.

Henderson's collegiate leadership journey includes impactful roles at Florida State �鶹�� and Clemson, where he championed academic success, leadership development, and holistic student-athlete programming. He is a past president of the National Association for Academic and Student-Athlete Development Professionals (N4A) (2021-22), the largest affiliate under the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) umbrella with more than 2,000 members.

Henderson has won several N4A awards over the years: Professional Excellence (2020); Model Practice Award—Florida State �鶹�� (LYFE Program, 2019); and the Professional Promise Award (2015). A two-time graduate of Michigan State �鶹�� (MSU), Henderson holds a BA in advertising and an MA in public relations. In 2024, he was recognized with MSU's Outstanding Alumni Award from the College of Communication Arts and Sciences, the college's highest honor for alumni. He also holds an MBA from Florida State.

As a student-athlete on MSU’s football team, Henderson saw action as both a defensive back and on special teams. In his freshman season (2006), he returned a blocked punt 33 yards for a touchdown vs. Northwestern to help fuel the greatest comeback in NCAA Division I-A history as the Spartans rallied from a 35-point deficit for a 41-38 victory.

"I got to know Ashton as a standout football student-athlete at Michigan State. Those skills he learned have manifested into making a tremendous impact on student athletes' lives at every place he's been. George Mason is getting a service-oriented leader who puts students first,” said Martin Jarmound, the Alice and Nahum Lainer Family director of athletics at the �鶹�� of California, Los Angeles.

“Ashton is an incredible leader with a bright future ahead of him. While Ashton was at Clemson, I knew that he would continue to soar in his Athletics pursuit, and I am proud of all that he has accomplished over the past decade. George Mason �鶹�� is fortunate to have Ashton join their team, and I wish him the best in his next chapter and continued leadership journey,” said Clemson �鶹�� President James Clements.

Henderson will join George Mason on May 19.

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at George Mason �鶹�� has named seasoned nonprofit leader Lisa Mariam as its new executive director, effective June 2. Selected after an extensive national search, Mariam will succeed Jennifer Disano, who is stepping down after 12 years of dedicated leadership.

Mariam brings extensive experience from her current role managing the Challenge America Program at the National Endowment for the Arts, administering grants to underrepresented communities. Previously, as senior director of grants and services at ArtsFairfax, she launched the Arts for Life initiative, expanded the grants program, and forged public-private partnerships. Her career began at the National Gallery of Art, organizing traveling exhibits. Mariam is also an active volunteer, serving on the Fairfax Master Arts Plan Task Force, Fairfax 50+ Plan, and the Board of the McLean Community Center.

“Lisa’s strategic vision, collaborative leadership, and alignment with OLLI’s mission make her the ideal choice to lead us forward,” said OLLI Mason Board Chair Debbie Engleson, who led the search committee. “Her community connections and expertise in growing membership and partnerships will guide OLLI into its next chapter.”

“OLLI Mason is renowned for its diverse classes—from arts to investing—along with clubs, events, and travel opportunities for older adults,” said Mariam. “It fosters vibrant longevity through mental, social, and physical engagement. I’m excited to work with the board, staff, and community partners to build on OLLI’s legacy, ensuring it remains a premier center for lifelong learning in Northern Virginia and a national model for holistic programming.”

During her tenure as executive director, Disano led OLLI Mason through a period of significant growth, expanding the educational program from 250 to more than 500 diverse, college-level courses annually that cover literature, science, technology, and the arts. She grew the staff to support this expansion, adopted hybrid learning models during the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure continuity, and strengthened OLLI’s affiliation with George Mason for enhanced member benefits. Disano’s focus on fiscal stability and volunteer empowerment fostered a vibrant, inclusive community, leaving a lasting legacy of lifelong learning. Disano is working on a podcast, Upstart Crow, in collaboration with George Mason’s Watershed Lit, and plans to serve as a consultant for nonprofits.

OLLI Mason is a nonprofit organization affiliated with George Mason and part of the national Osher Lifelong Learning network. It serves more than 1,000 active learners aged 50+ with more than 500 college-level courses annually, covering a broad range of subjects.

Programs are offered in-person at the Fairfax Campus, at satellite sites throughout Fairfax County, and online.

George Mason �鶹�� welcomed 229 “Junior Patriots” to its campuses on April 24 for the annual Take Your Junior Patriot to Work event. Faculty and staff had the chance to bring the children in their lives to campus and experience life at George Mason for a day.

With more than 40 activities hosted across the Fairfax Campus, Science and Technology Campus, and Mason Square, attendees learned about George Mason and explored different parts of campus life.

At Fairfax, the event kicked off with musical entertainment from the Green Machine and a visit from the Patriot on Merten Lawn.

Other highlights at Fairfax included a soccer clinic, emergency preparedness training, Junior Patriot Pitch, tent-building and s’mores, video game design, a “Touch-a-Truck” experience with emergency vehicles, a stuffed animal wellness clinic, and ice cream and games at the Corner Pocket.

The SciTech Campus offered a behind-the-scenes tour of the Hylton Performing Arts Center, swimming at the Freedom Center, a library tour, and picnic.

A wide range of activities hosted by campus partners allowed participants to choose their own adventure based on each child’s age and interests. The City of Fairfax Fire Department also joined the touch-a-truck event.

Stearns Center Workshop: High-Impact Practices

Are you interested in developing learning experiences where students can apply their skills and competencies in and beyond the classroom? Participate in a two-part workshop series from the Stearns Center. Fundamentals of Effective Teaching explains the critical elements of teaching today’s students. High-Impact Practices and Applied Learning shows you how to use transparent assignment design for courses with internships, undergraduate research, and project-based learning. This is a two-part series, and the first workshop will be offered on Monday, May 12, from 10 a.m. to noon via Zoom. Learn more and register.

Resource Expo for Federal Employees and Contractors

Build an Artificial Reef for the Chesapeake Bay

Roll up your sleeves—it’s reef-building time! Dive into the process of helping create artificial reef structures that will be deployed in the Chesapeake Bay. Participants will help build molds, mix cement, and pour the mix into forms that will shape tomorrow’s marine habitats. This event will be hosted on Monday, May 12, from noon to 2 p.m. on the Science and Technology Campus, Bull Run Parking Lot. RSVP on Mason 360.

During the event, hear from Jesse Howe, George Mason alum and assistant director of Coastal Conservation Association Maryland, who will share how artificial reefs support oyster population restoration, biodiversity, and help restore the bay's ecosystem. This is a great opportunity for students seeking volunteer/service hours.

Math Enrichment Camps for Grades 6–9

Esports Summer Camp for Teens at George Mason

Gamers and parents of gamers: George Mason �鶹�� Esports is hosting an Esports Summer Camp in June and July for ages 13–18. If your child is passionate about gaming and is interested in exploring college gaming opportunities, this is a great way to introduce them to structured gaming experiences and skills development workshops, as well as other great things happening on campus. Seed Library at Fenwick

The new Seed Library is located on a cart on the first floor of Fenwick Library on the Fairfax Campus. The library includes books and online resources that can help you learn to garden. Seed libraries have grown in popularity around the country, found in public libraries, community centers, community gardens, makerspaces, and university libraries. A seed library is stocked with seeds, which patrons take, grow, and then, if possible, return seeds to the library. The emphasis, however, is on the taking and growing of seeds, and less on the drying and returning of seeds. Seed libraries promote growing your own food, well-being, community, and learning in a hands-on way.

What begins as a seemingly simple decision becomes more complex as ingrained ideas, systemic racism, and diverging perspectives collide. A thoughtful and poignant look at the consequences of our actions (or lack thereof), this show asks how you determine the truth when faced with a life-or-death decision.

Virginia Opera and Richmond Symphony present the the highly anticipated world premiere of Loving v. Virginia. A young couple's interracial marriage in 1958 sparks a case that leads to the Supreme Court and a victory for civil rights in the United States. This operatic retelling is based on the true story of Mildred and Richard Loving.

Mason Symphony Orchestra Concert: Concerto Competition Winners

Join the spring finale concert featuring the Mason Symphony Orchestra, with conductors Soo Han and Michael Stern. The Mason Symphony Orchestra will feature three winners of the 2025 Mason Concerto Competition: Bolun Zhang (piano) will perform the third movement of Saint-Saëns' Piano Concerto No. 2 in G Minor; Nathan Plapinger (euphonium) will perform the first movement of Cosma's Euphonium Concerto; and Kai Shi (piano) will perform the first movement of Ravel's Piano Concerto in G Major.

Patricia King is May Employee of the Month

Patricia King is May Employee of the Month Katarina Benson Wed, 04/23/2025 - 11:47

For the past two years, Patricia King has been the office manager in Research and Innovation Initiatives in the Office of Research, Innovation, and Economic Impact (ORIEI). During that time, she has taken on incredible amounts of responsibility with ease and revolutionized the office. Her Employee of the Month nomination included nine letters of support from her colleagues.

“If ORIEI had its own employee of the month award, Patricia would have been a worthy choice in almost any month over the last two years. As much as any employee I have worked with in 14+ years at George Mason, Patricia's daily conduct and demeanor exemplify integrity, careful stewardship, and thriving together,” said Christopher DiTeresi, associate vice president for Office of Research Integrity and Assurance (ORIA).

Rebekah Hersch, associate vice president of Research and Innovation Initiatives, said, “You know when you interact with Patricia, you will be met with graciousness and an openness to address your question or concern.”

David Myers, animal care program manager for ORIA, echoed Hersch’s praise “For the two years I have been working with Patricia, I have been very fortunate to have the support she brings to my unit. Patricia is extremely hard-working, dedicated, friendly, and supportive. She has always responded with enthusiasm and a smile even when I knew she already had a bunch of other tasks on her plate.”

“Patricia listens attentively to our problems, engages in thoughtful discussions on best practices and solutions, and keeps us informed every step of the way,” said Peng Warweg, assistant director of research operations in the Center for Advancing Human-Machine Partnership. “On numerous occasions, we had faced situations where new knowledge and skills were needed. Patricia takes on these challenges by seeking advice from experts or learning new skills on her own.”

Andre Marshall, ORIEI vice president, said, “Ms. King has provided leadership during an incredibly difficult time of transition... She has been critical to our continued support of researchers throughout the university.”

“Patricia consistently demonstrates exceptional work ethic and integrity by going above and beyond to support and help her colleagues. When I reach out to Patricia with a question about a process or adjacent office matter, Patricia doesn’t simply tell me what I need to do, she initiates the legwork and provides a personal introduction to the person with whom I need to connect,” said Heather Arnold, research development associate, who also called working with Patricia “a bright spot in my work week.”

Alison Landsberg, a professor in the Department of History and Art History and director of the Center for Humanities Research (CHR), said, “I’ve worked on a range of tasks with Patricia and in every case she has performed above and beyond expectations. We at the CHR have benefited enormously from her ever-growing skillset, and her positive attitude. Mason is lucky to have her!”“Over the years that we have worked together, I found Patricia to be a dependable, honest, and enthusiastic colleague. Even in these times of change and uncertainty, Patricia manages to stay on track with deadlines, ensuring the ORIEI units continue to operate efficiently. She is currently supporting three large units under ORIEI which is an incredibly heavy lift!” said Heather Aleknavage, administrative assistant and project coordinator in the Office of Risk, Safety, and Resilience.

How did you come to Mason:

I came to Mason after 12 years working in the Virginia Community College System. I was excited by the opportunity to work with and support research at George Mason �鶹��. I grew up in Northern Virginia and was very much aware of George Mason’s excellent reputation and was particularly attracted to the idea of supporting the amazing research work being done by the university.

Best day on the job:

My best day on the job was the day I found out I would be receiving this award. I was very surprised, and I am deeply touched that members of the team I support took time from their very busy schedules to submit nominations on my behalf. I am grateful to work with my team and deeply appreciate this award.

What do you like best about working at Mason:

What I like best about working at Mason would be the employees and students I work with. My colleagues are brilliant, professional, and kind people. Respect and kindness are modeled by the leadership in ORIEI, and they set the tone and serve as examples for our employee team. We support each other and work to help each other be successful in our jobs. I frequently work with other George Mason offices, and I have been fortunate to meet many good people who are willing to help when needed and are happy to collaborate. Working with the student employees is also very rewarding. �鶹�� student employees bring energy and fresh ideas with them and are a joy to work with.

What do you like to do when you’re not working:

I love to read. I also enjoy puzzles and board games. I am a novice knitter. I love both cats and dogs, and enjoy spending time with my feline companion Louie, and my grand dog Rodeo. I love music and I collect vinyl records. I enjoy genealogy, and I am a big fan of Finding Your Roots with Dr. Henry Louis Gates Jr. I also enjoy UK comedy panel shows.
