Biography
Gail Scott White听is a new media scenographer and animator who collaboratively makes 鈥淟ive Movies,鈥 a hybrid art form that interactively synthesizes animation and cinematic art, and theatrical and musical elements with built environments and live performance. She has created new media scenography for dozens of productions including:听White Witch听at Symphony Space (NYC), B3W鈥檚听Confined, Dixon Place (NYC) and Irondale Center (Brooklyn NY); Ariel Dance Theatre鈥檚听Flush: The Gyre Project, Long Center for the Performing Arts (Austin TX); Maryland Opera Studio鈥檚 premiere of听Shadowboxer听(on the life of Joe Louis), Clarice Smith Center for the Performing Arts (College Park MD);听The Heidi Chronicles听by Wendy Wasserstein, Arena Stage (Washington DC); and听Hamlet听at Temple Theatre in Sanford NC, and Actors Guild of Lexington (KY). Additional new media scenography includes Cyburbia Productions鈥櫶Silence & Darkness, a live movie for the cell phone age听and听Time Traveler Zero Zero 鈥 A Story of John Titor; Komar & Melamid鈥檚 opera听Naked Revolution听(composed by Dave Soldier);听Marisol听by Jos茅 Rivera;听Doctor Faustus听by Christopher Marlowe;听Mephisto听by Klaus Mann/Ariane Mnouchkine; Mois茅s Kaufman and Tectonic Theater Project鈥檚听33 Variations听in Arena Stage鈥檚 workshop production at Georgetown 麻豆国产; and several productions for Encompass New Opera Theatre (NYC). Her installation work has been exhibited at the Alternative Museum and the A.I.R. Gallery in NYC. She is the co-editor of听Live Movies: A Field Guide to New Media for the Performing Arts. Her work, in the 鈥淟ive Movies鈥 field has been published in听American Theatre听magazine (NYC), the international journal听TheatreForum听(published by UC-San Diego) and听Live Design听magazine (NYC).听Live Movies听is also cited in:听Cyborg Theatre: Corporeal/Technological Intersections in Multimedia Performance听by Jennifer Parker-Starbuck (Palgrave Macmillan, 2011), and听Entangled: Technology and the Transformation of Performance听by Chris Salter, foreword by Peter Sellars (MIT Press, 2010). White鈥檚 work has been funded by an Artists Fellowship from the Virginia Commission on the Arts, Virginia鈥檚 Center for Innovative Technology, and by a $125,000 National Endowment for the Arts grant for the 鈥淣ew Stage Technology Project.鈥
Gail Scott White is a Full Professor of New Media Art at Mason鈥檚 School of Art, and she has also taught art at Colgate 麻豆国产 and Cornell 麻豆国产.
